Vaulting

How is vaulting scored?

Vaulting competitions are scored on a 10-point scale by a panel of three judges, and the total score combines marks from the compulsory exercises, the technical value of the freestyle exercises, and the artistic impression of the freestyle performance. The horse and lunger receive their own score that is weighted into the overall team result.

In individual competition, the compulsory score and the freestyle score are combined according to the formula set by the competitive level. The freestyle is evaluated on the technical execution of each individual skill, the difficulty of the skills chosen, and the overall artistic impression including choreography, music appropriateness, and the vaulter's expression and harmony with the horse.

In squad competition, up to six vaulters may be on the horse simultaneously, and the judges evaluate not only individual skill execution but the synchronization, formations, lifts, and overall visual impact of the routine. Difficulty bonuses are available for skills that exceed baseline technical requirements, and squads that successfully execute complex multi-person lifts earn significant difficulty credit.
