The American Vaulting Association structures competitive vaulting through a series of levels that progress from entry-level developmental competition through national championship caliber, with each level defined by specific technical requirements, compulsory exercise demands, and freestyle difficulty minimums.
At the developmental end, Walk levels allow new vaulters to compete performing compulsory exercises and a freestyle at the walk rather than the canter, providing an accessible entry point for children and beginners. Canter levels begin at Level 1 and progress through Level 4, with each level requiring more complex compulsory exercises, higher freestyle difficulty, and more sophisticated artistic presentation.
National championship competition draws competitors who have qualified through regional qualifying events, and top competitors may be invited to represent the United States at FEI international competitions including the Pan American Vaulting Championships and the World Equestrian Games. FEI vaulting is divided into Young Vaulter divisions for juniors and open Adult divisions, representing the highest standard in the sport.
