Vaulting

What role does music play in vaulting freestyle?

Music in vaulting freestyle serves simultaneously as a structural framework for the choreography, a communication medium between the vaulter and the judges, and an expressive vehicle that transforms athletic skill into artistic performance. The choice of music is among the most consequential decisions a vaulter or vaulting team makes in freestyle preparation.

At the technical level, the music must be chosen with attention to the horse's canter tempo — the choreography and the music must align so that the vaulter's movements feel organic to the beat rather than imposed upon it. A mismatch between the music's rhythm and the horse's movement creates an impression of awkwardness that judges notice immediately.

Artistically, top vaulters and coaches choose music that supports the vaulter's personal expression and complements their physical qualities. The judges' artistic impression score specifically evaluates how effectively the vaulter communicates through the music, so a vaulter who is technically correct but emotionally unexpressive in relation to their chosen music will score lower than a vaulter who inhabits it completely.
