A successful vaulting coach must be knowledgeable across three distinct domains simultaneously — equine training and lunge technique, gymnastics and body movement, and the pedagogical skills to develop athletes across a wide age and ability range. This combination is genuinely rare, and the best vaulting coaches have developed their expertise through years of competing, working with other disciplines, and learning from experienced mentors.
On the horse side, the coach must understand how to develop and maintain a lunge horse, how to evaluate movement quality, and how to identify when the horse's behavior indicates a physical or management problem. A coach who cannot lunge competently will be unable to optimize the horse's contribution to the team's scores.
On the gymnastic side, the coach must understand how to develop the physical qualities that vaulting demands, how to progressively introduce skills safely, and how to create a training environment where athletes feel safe to attempt new skills. American Vaulting Association coaching certification programs provide a structured pathway for developing these skills formally.
