The Training Scale β€” The Foundation of Everything

Every movement in dressage, from the most basic free walk to the most advanced piaffe, is built on the German Training Scale: a six-element pyramid that defines correct training progression. No upper-level work is possible without a solid foundation at every level below it.

β‘
Rhythm (Takt) β€” Regular, consistent footfall at all gaits. Without rhythm, nothing else is possible.
β‘‘
Relaxation (Losgelassenheit) β€” Mental and physical looseness. A tense horse cannot be trained.
β‘’
Contact (Anlehnung) β€” Soft, consistent connection from the horse's mouth through the rein to the rider's hand.
β‘£
Impulsion (Schwung) β€” Energetic engagement from the hindquarters. Power that flows through a relaxed back.
β‘€
Straightness (Geraderichtung) β€” Hind feet tracking into front feet footprints on straight lines and curves.
β‘₯
Collection (Versammlung) β€” The apex. The horse carries more weight behind, elevating the forehand. Built from everything below.

The most common mistake in dressage: Attempting to force collection before Rhythm, Relaxation, Contact, and Impulsion are established. Collection cannot be pulled from the front β€” it must be developed from behind. A horse pulled into a false "frame" is not collected; it is merely compressed. The damage to the training relationship can take years to repair.
