Why Groundwork Matters
Every behavioral problem under saddle has a groundwork solution — or reveals a groundwork gap. A horse that doesn't yield its hindquarters will resist a leg cue under saddle. A horse that doesn't back respectfully on the ground won't back softly with a rein. A horse that hasn't been desensitized properly will spook unpredictably on the trail.
The ground is where you earn the horse's trust, establish your leadership, and build the communication language you'll use for the rest of your training relationship. Time spent on the ground is never wasted.
The Groundwork Sequence
There is a correct order. Each skill builds on the previous one. Don't skip ahead — holes in the foundation become problems later.
